To separate a mixture of two or more liquids, the mixture is poured into the separator and left undisturbed until it spontaneously separates into distinct layers, often referred to as phases. Then, each layer is carefully drained from the bottom into separate laboratory containers by opening the tap located at the bottom stem.

Most commonly used for separating essential oils from hydrosols. Due to its lower density, the essential oil typically floats on the surface of the hydrosol. After opening the tap of the separator, the hydrosol is drained first, leaving the oil in the vessel.
